Litter Box Safety
Sunday, October 19, 2014
Litter boxes are breeding grounds for germs and bacteria that can produce serious health problems, so regular scooping and cleaning are very important.
Among the concerns to avoid is toxoplasmosis – a common infection that cats acquire if they are allowed outside to kill and eat wild animals. Pregnant women and people whose immune systems are weak or compromised are encouraged to “steer clear” of litter boxes for this reason.
Likewise, it’s obviously a good idea to keep small children away from the box, as well as dogs who, unfortunately, often view the contents of litter boxes as complimentary hors d’oeuvres.
