Winter Time Fireplace Safety
Friday, November 14, 2014
Now is the time of year that many of us are starting to use our fireplaces. Here are a few tips for avoiding common fire risks:
1) Have your chimney inspected and potentially cleaned by a professional if you haven’t done so in a while. Many house fires are the result of fires that get started up inside chimneys from the build-up of residue there.
2) Have a mesh screen or other effective barrier in place to prevent sparks from coming out of the fireplace.
3) Don’t leave a fire unattended at night. Make sure it is out – douse it with water if necessary.
4) Don’t have any combustible materials located close to the fireplace such that they could catch fire. 3 feet is typically a minimum distance.
